Beltane ~ Bright Fire

Beltane honors life! Celebrated on May 1st, Beltane (Also known as 'May Day') marks the transition point from Spring to Summer on the Wheel of the Year. This is a ‘heady’ time of lust, passion and fertility, marking the return of vitality to both the Earth and the Sun. Blossoms on the trees are giving way to robust leaf growth, young animals are growing into maturity, and the daylight continues to lengthen and strengthen as we move toward the full power of Summer. Love and commitment are themes of this Sabbat, along with abundance and creativity. Handfastings, or Wiccan wedding ceremonies, are traditionally held at Beltane.

The word “Beltane” actually comes from an ancient Celtic word meaning “bright fire,” so it’s highly appropriate to include the fire element of some kind in your celebrations. 

In ancient Irish culture, from which the name of the Sabbat is borrowed, people lit giant sacred fires on this day to purify and protect their cattle from illness. The cattle were driven between two fires to ritually cleanse them and connect them with the Sun.

Lughnasadh ~ First Harvest

Lughnasadh symbolizes the fullness of life! Lughnasadh

The Festival of the God Lugh, or 'Lammas,' (Loaf Mass - the Christian version of this holiday) celebrated on the 1st of August, marks the midpoint between the Summer Solstice and the Autumn Equinox, ushering in the 'dark half' or the 'dying half' of the year. A celebration of the bountiful grain, fruits and vegetables that are ripe and ready to be harvested and enjoyed!

The first loaves of the new harvest were traditionally baked at this time, so breads are usually the main 'theme' in this feast. Another staple at these celebrations is cakes and ale. One way to celebrate Lughnasadh is with a bread communion in which everyone attending brings a favorite item of fresh-baked bread to share with others. For those lucky enough to have home brewers in their social circles, it's the perfect occasion to sample their creations.

Lughnasadh is a time for celebrating hearth, home, family and friends. Even though the weather is still warm, this celebration acknowledges that winter is on the way, and it's time to prepare for its arrival.

As the earth grows colder, entering into its dying time, turning within, we too are given the opportunity to look within. We’re given the chance to attend to ourselves and to the dusty, unexamined parts of our lives. Samhain heralds in a ‘darker’ season where we are asked to radically embrace loss, to willingly and moreover actively journey within, into the labyrinthine passages of our hearts and minds and souls; we’re asked to journey into memory and to sweep out those hidden internal corners all those things that no longer serve us. Here, we’re given a chance to take stock and to reevaluate. More importantly, we’re asked to rejoice, to give thanks for the blessings that have fallen, often unexpectedly, into our hands throughout the previous months. More importantly, Samhain is about the memory of things long past and long gone. Loss does hold value. Loss teaches us what we have. It teaches us how to recognize and treasure the smallest of blessings in our lives. Samhain is a time when, above all else, we are asked to honor these aspects of our lives.

While our ancestors are always with us, there’s something special about this time of year. Perhaps it’s only that we are primed to be more open to their presence around Samhain, perhaps it is that with the world withering in beauty all around us, it is easier to put ourselves in a place where we can consciously touch them. Let us remember them now: their names, their stories, their struggles, their sacrifices. Let us carry their graves on our backs, in our hearts, in our minds, in our memories. We are here because of them. We are their legacy: generation after generation of human brutality, suffering, indifference, and loss and we are here. Generation after generation of human celebration, courage, integrity, and hope and we are here. Let us praise them. Let us remember their names. Let us imbibe their sorrows and their joys. We are their living trust.

Wheel of the Year Candle Set

The Wheel Of The Year, is (typically) eight festivals, observing Solar energies at the solstices, and equinoxes, and the Fire energies on the cross quarter days. The Four Seasons are known as Solar Festivals, which mark the seasonal change brought by the powerful energy of the Sun. The cross quarter days are marked by fire festivals, and are usually celebrated as significant agricultural festivals. Together, the Solar Festivals and the Fire Festivals make up what we know as the Wheel Of The Year.

These 8 festivals also represent the active and dormant states of nature, people and harvests. Each of the festival days was ruled by a governing deity, whether a God or Goddess, with each region having its own associated deity. From planting to reaping to winter to summer... the seasons were of great importance to our ancestors, for their very existence depended upon plenty of rainfall, mild winters and plentiful harvests.
