If you’re not familiar with our little candle company here in New England, 30% from every retail candle sold benefits a charitable cause, ALWAYS!
So for the entire month of September, donations from our candle sales (online and in our shoppe in Eastford, CT!) will benefit Carrigan Nelson of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, on behalf of Aquidneck Island Charity Golf (AICG).
For the past 14 years, this amazing organization has raised over $200,000 for children and/or young adults with life threatening illnesses, and have been able to grant several wishes to these children annually with the proceeds that are raised through golf tournaments and various events that take place throughout the year. Their intention this year is to exceed the amount that they have raised annually and, with great hopes, grant even more wishes for years and years to come! The Aquidneck Island Charity is organized by and all-volunteer team and friends from Aquidneck Island and surrounding areas.
To learn more how you can help Aquidneck Island Charity help Carrigan and her family, please reach out to Tommy Nassar at email@example.com while their aicgolf.org site is under construction. You can of course find and follow them on Facebook at Aquidneck Island Charity Golf.
A little bit about Carrigan…❤️
Carrigan by nature has a high-energy outgoing personality so it was unusual for her to struggle with low energy. Over a period of months, her left leg began aching and as the months progressed, so did her pain that several medical test proved inconclusive. Later in Taekwondo training, her left leg began to swell and a mass appeared in her lower calf which eventually produced a limp and constant pain. More tests ensued and a sports injury was the preliminary diagnosis, but intuition told her that there was more going on.
With fierce determination, persistence and the insistence of her primary care doctor, targeted testing was conducted which resulted in the diagnosis of a type of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma, a rare form of cancer affecting one in a million. The good news was the cancer was isolated to her left leg. The bad news was that the tumor was the size of a tennis ball and part of her leg may need to be amputated. Chemo immediately began which continued into the fall that year. A surgical procedure was scheduled to remove the tumor, while attempting to save her leg, hopefully allowing for affective mobility with the aid of a leg brace.
This type of cancer has a five year 70% survival rate if it has not metastasized. Her doctor says chances are "good" for a positive outcome and that she should be able to practice taekwondo and dance again someday.
Carrigan is a singer, performer and youth mentor. Her wish is to record a song that she wrote herself, have it played on the radio, and sing it live at a large venue. She is determined to raise awareness of Osteosarcoma, and work diligently on a lifetime of advocacy regarding this rare childhood cancer. Because this cancer is so often misdiagnosed early on as a sports injury, raising awareness may help others to get a diagnosis and treatment sooner. This would be a wish come true for Carrigan, and we’d like to help her in any way we can!
***The information above was shared about Carrigan for an event that took place pre-COVID. As of September 2021, Carrigan’s cancer has now metastasized to her lungs. Another spot was found recently, so this brave young lady has had to endure yet another surgery and more chemotherapy.***
Carrigan, we are keeping you and your family in our healing thoughts and prayers. Ignite your heart-light, and let your beautiful light shine as best you can! We’ll do our best to spread light and kindness by raising awareness on this disease, one candle at a time!
All Mystic Pines candles are handcrafted, 100% American-grown soy and beeswax, cotton-wicked (lead-free) and Reiki blessed. Please note that we are now in our busiest season, so it may take up 4 to 6 business days to complete and ship your order. Thank you so much for your patience!! :)
HOUSEKEEPING: Candles burn best (and longest), when you allow a wax 'pool' to extend completely to the edge of the glass, otherwise your candle will tunnel straight down and the life of your candle will diminish greatly. Ceiling fans and floor fans (any type of moving air!) can also affect the way your candle burns.
CAUTION: Never leave a candle burning unattended. Certain candles may contain crystals and herbs that could potentially 'spark' or crack the glass. Always burn your candles, votives and tea lights on a fireproof dish when possible.
